The Wheel of Time - "Time is a wheel with seven spokes, each spoke an Age. As the Wheel turns, the Ages come and go, each leaving memories that fade to legend, then to myth, and are forgotten by the time that Age comes again. The Pattern of an Age is slightly different each time an Age comes, and each time it is subject to greater change."
Ages - A spoke in the Wheel of Time.
Pattern of an Age - "The Wheel of Time weaves the threads of human lives into the Pattern of an Age, often called simply the Pattern, which forms the substance of reality for that Age". Moiraine says that the Creator is good, the Dark One is evil, but the Pattern is neither.
Web of Destiny - A great change in the Pattern of an Age, centered around one or more people who are ta'veren. In the Old Tongue, it is called "Ta'maral'ailen".
Ta'veren - "A person around whom the Wheel of Time weaves all surrounding life-threads, perhaps ALL life-threads, to form a Web of Destiny". Known Ta'veren: Artur Hawkwing, Mabriam en Shereed, Mat Cauthon, Perrin Aybara, Rand al'Thor
The Creator and the Dark One - In the beginning...
The Creator created the Wheel of Time, which is time itself. The Creator imprisoned the Dark One outside of the Pattern at the moment of creation. A bore was made into the Dark One's prison, but it was sealed before he entered the world. It is now held closed by seven seals.

According to Ishamael's philosophy, in each age the Creator and the Dark One have champions who lead their battle for supremacy. These champions are the same two souls who are reborn at the end of each age. The Creator's champion in the Age of Legends was Lews Therin Telamon, the Dragon. In the current age, the champion is the Dragon Reborn, Rand al'Thor. The Dark One's champion in the Age of Legends was Ishamael who was partly trapped with him when the bore was sealed. By all appearances, Ishamael was still the Dark One's champion until his death at the end of TDR. Since that time, the Dark One has tempted several of his minions with the title Nae'blis, but that honor has apparently been bestowed on one of the new Forsaken, Moridin.

Shai'tan

  • Forsaken
The name given to thirteen of the most powerful Aes Sedai of the Age of Legends, thus among most powerful ever known, who went over to the Dark One during the War of the Shadow in return for the promise of immortality. According to both legend and fragmentary records, they were imprisoned along with Dark One when his prison was re-sealed. The names given to them are still used to frighten children. They prefer to call themselves The Chosen.
The True Source - "The driving force of the universe, which turns the Wheel of Time. It is divided into a male half (saidin) and a female half (saidar), which work at the same time with and against each other."
One Power - "The power drawn from the True Source."
Channeling - The act of controlling the flow of the One Power.
Men grow strong in the One Power faster than women. Even after being raised to the shawl, Aes Sedai may take another five years before they reach their full strength. Excessive luck and sudden unexpected rises in prominence can be early indicators of the ability to channel in men. Men generally begin channeling between the ages of sixteen and twenty-six.
The female Forsaken know how to mask their ability to channel so that Aes Sedai cannot detect them.
    Channelers age slowly.
Five Powers - "There are threads to the One Power, and each person who can channel the One Power can usually grasp some threads better than others. These threads are named according to the sort of things that can be done using them - Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Spirit - and are called the Five Powers....While Spirit was found equally in men and in women, great ability with Earth and/or Fire was found much more often among men, with Water and/or Air among women".
Saidar and Saidin - Saidar is the female half of the True Source and saidin is the male half of the True Source. Only a man can draw on saidin, only a woman on saidar.
Saidin is fouled by the taint of the Dark One, like a thin slick of rancid oil on water. The water is still pure, but it cannot be touched without touching the foulness. Their bonds, oaths and ties to the Great Lord protect the male Forsaken from the taint.
Gentling/Stilling - Gentling is "the act, performed by Aes Sedai, of shutting off a male who can channel from the One Power...A man who has been gentled can still sense the True Source, but he cannot touch it." Stilling is "the act, performed by Aes Sedai, of shutting off a female who can channel from the One Power...A woman who has been stilled can still sense the True Source, but she cannot touch it".
True Power - The Great Lord of the Dark provides his most favored minions with the True Power that comes directly from him. It is even more addictive and dangerous than the One Power. Traveling using the True Power involves ripping a hole in the Pattern. Users of the True Power such as Moridin develop saa or black spots that travel across the eyes. In the Age of Legends only thirty were given this privilege by the Great Lord.
The gholam can detect True Power weaves. He feels it as an itch somewhat different from the One Power.
Since he became Nae'blis, only Moridin is allowed access to the True Power.

Tel'aran'rhiod - The World of Dreams
Dreamwalking - Those with the Talent of dreamwalking can enter Tel'aran'rhiod in their sleep and walk through the world of dreams. The ability to dreamwalk is not connected to the One Power. The Wise Ones believe that male dreamwalkers are extremely rare. There are other ways one may enter the world of dreams. Certain ter'angreal allow the wearer to enter Tel'aran'rhiod. A channeler who is strong enough to Travel can open a gateway to Tel'aran'rhiod and enter it physically. The Wise Ones consider this a bad thing.
Between reality and Tel'aran'rhiod there is a gap which looks like space filled with stars. Each star is the dream of someone sleeping. A dreamwalker may also enter this gap. The dreamwalker may observe or even enter another's dream. The dreamwalker may drag someone into their own dream, but the Wise Ones also consider this an evil thing.
Aes Sedai shield their dreams so they may not be spied on. Male channelers can also shield their dreams but the shield is different. A female shield is hard and clear while a male shield is murky and cloudy.

  • Shadowspawn
A generic description for creatures of the Dark One. They include cafar, Darkhounds, Draghkar, Fades, the forger, gholam, Gray Men, Trollocs and Worms.

    Gholam
Six gholam, three each appearing male and female, were created during the War of Power as Aes Sedai assassins. They look like ordinary people but they are immensely strong and have no bones. They are immune to the One Power and can detect a channeler at fifty paces. One at least survived to the present in a stasis box. Gholam live on fresh blood. Gholam feel the One Power and even the True Power as an itch somewhat like Myrddraal do. They can detect the usage of the One Power over enormous distance - several miles.

    Myrddraal
    - Eyeless, Fade, Halfman, Lurk
Myrddraal are the spawn of Trollocs and the taint of evil is even stronger in them. They are man-sized and are pasty white. They have no eyes, yet they see like eagles. They have powers that stem from the Dark One. They are no match for an Aes Sedai, but they can best most warriors. The look of a Fade inspires fear in men. In the Trolloc Wars, Dreadlords commanded Fades that led Trollocs into battle.

    Shaidar Haran
Super Fade. Shaidar Haran means "Hand of the Dark" in the Old Tongue.
It looks like a Myrddraal except that it is much taller and it appears to have a sense of humor.

    Chronology:
  • Shaidar Haran meets Demandred at Shayol Ghul, introduces itself, and escorts him to the Pit of Doom. (LoC,Prologue)
  • Mesaana visits the Pit of Doom, but neither the Great Lord nor an overly large Myrddraal will speak to her. (LoC,Prologue)

  • Shaidar Haran watches from the shadows as Sammael scatters the Shaido across the Westlands. It is not sure if this will further chaos or not. (ACoS,Ch40)
  • Shaidar Haran tells Graendal that Moridin is Nae'blis and she is to pay him a visit. It tells her that when it speaks she is to hear the voice of the Great Lord. (TPoD,Ch12)

  • Trollocs
Aginor created the Trollocs during the War of Power as soldiers for the Shadow. They are huge, maybe eight feet tall. They have the body of a man and the head and feet of an animal such as a bear, bird, wolf or goat. They are very strong, but they are too stupid, lazy and cowardly to be good soldiers.
Trollocs see well in the dark, but bright light blinds them. Some can track by scent or sound, but they are lazy and easily give up. They kill for the pleasure of killing. They cannot be trusted unless they are afraid of you, and then not far.
Trollocs are divided into tribe-like bands, each with their own sigil.

    Bands: Ahf'frait, Al'ghol, Bhan'sheen, Dha'vol, Dhai'mon, Dhjin'nen, Ghar'ghael, Ghob'hlin, Gho'hlem, Ghraem'lan, Ko'bal, Kno'mon

    Aes Sedai
    - "Servant to All" in the Old Tongue
Wielders of the One Power. Their organization is headquartered in the White Tower in the city of Tar Valon. Aes Sedai live much longer than ordinary people, sometimes as much as three hundred years. Among Aes Sedai, speaking of age is considered extremely rude. Aes Sedai are known for their look of agelessness. Weaker sisters defer to stronger sisters and must obey them if they are much stronger. Other factors in order of precedence are time in training and age.
Trainees, girls usually in their mid-teens, enter the White Tower as novices. After extensive training they are raised to Accepted. After even more extensive training they are raised to Aes Sedai.
Most Aes Sedai bond men as Warders. Warders provide physical protection and the bond provides additional mutual benefits.

    Asha'man
The asha'man are the male counterpart to the current Aes Sedai. They are lead by Rand. His second in command is Mazrim Taim, who has trained most of them. They call their organization the Black Tower in contrast to the Aes Sedai White Tower and are headquartered in a rural area near Caemlyn.

    Whitecloaks
The Children of the Light, disparagingly called Whitecloaks, are an organization of zealous foes of the Dark and defenders of the Light. They were organized during War of the Hundred Years by Lothair Mantelar to combat the increasing number of Darkfriends. Their symbol is a golden sunburst on a field of white.
Their headquarters is the Fortress of the Light in the city of Amador in Amadicia. In truth they rule the country of Amadicia.
They believe that any use of the One Power is the work of the Dark One and thus all Aes Sedai are Darkfriends.
